Pierre Jules (P.J.) Mene (1810-1879). Born in Paris, Mene was the son of a metal turner & he received his earliest teaching on sculpture & foundry from his father. In the 1850’s Mene opened his own foundry, creating lost-wax sculptures. Much of Mene’s early studies were made at the “Jardin des Plantes” in Paris, where he developed a great talent for animal sculptures. He was one of the most prolific & popular sculptors of the Animalier School, as well as one of it’s earliest pioneers.
